The Al-Abbas's (p) Holy Shrine continues construction work on the modern market as part of the Grand Bab al-Qibla Courtyard project
Teams from the Engineering Projects Department at the Al-Abbas's (p) Holy Shrine are continuing work on the "Modern Market" project, located behind the arcades of the Great Bab al-Qibla Courtyard expansion project.
Engineer Ghaith Najih Khudair, a member of the project's resident engineering team, stated: "The market covers an area of approximately 4,000 square meters and includes the alleyways and shops falling within the expansion zone of the shrine of Aba al-Fadl al-Abbas (peace be upon him)." He noted that the completion rate has reached 40%, following the finalization of infrastructure works and the partial completion of architectural finishing.
He added that the project aims to organize commercial activity between visitors and shop owners, help reduce visitor congestion, and create emergency access routes during mass Ziyarat events.
He highlighted that a key feature of the project is the unification of the Islamic architectural style and the showcasing of the Old City's Islamic identity; Karbalai tiles have been utilized, and Quranic verses have been incorporated into the decorative elements.
Khudair explained that the market will be equipped with essential services, including lighting and cooling systems, as well as a fire suppression system.
This project is part of a series of urban and service development initiatives undertaken by the Al-Abbas's (p) Holy Shrine, aimed at enhancing the quality of services provided to visitors and preserving the Islamic architectural character of the Old City.
