Many people who are not blessed with children turn to various available methods, including artificial insemination, which has multiple forms. Among them is taking the husband’s sperm, fertilizing the wife’s egg in a laboratory, and then implanting it into her womb to grow and be born. Another form is taking the sperm of another man and implanting it into the wife’s womb until it grows and is born. What is the religious ruling on such cases? And to whom is the child attributed?
Answer
In the name of Allah, it is not permissible to fertilize a woman’s ovum with the sperm of anyone other than her husband, regardless of the reasons or circumstances. However, if it is possible to fertilize the wife’s ovum with the husband’s sperm after medically extracting the sperm from his semen outside the womb, and then implanting that ovum into his wife’s womb—or the womb of any woman the child is considered the son/daughter of the husband and his wife. Allah knows best.
