: A man contracted a permanent marriage with a woman and set the mahr as a wedding ring without specifying any particular characteristic for it. Does she deserve the value of an ordinary ring, or is the mahr invalid due to its ambiguity, and should she receive the mahr al-mithl (equivalent mahr) upon consummation?
Answer
In the name of Allah, it depends on the custom of the husband’s and wife’s families. If both families have the same custom, that applies; if the customs differ, the custom of the wife’s family is followed. Allah knows best.
