Is it recommended for a father to ask his father (the child’s grandfather) to name his grandson? If so, does it include the maternal grandfather? Is it disliked or improper for the father to name the child before the grandfather, or is it acceptable since the right belongs to the father?
Answer
In the name of Allah, it is not established as a recommendation in our view. According to Islamic law, the father is the one who is directly responsible for naming the child. He may consult both paternal and maternal grandfathers. However, if the grandfather names the child with the intention of giving a blessed name or pleasing the child’s parents, it is recommended. Allah knows best.
