A laboratory company in Singapore has succeeded in producing shrimp meat using a single stem cell, which they make divide, generating other cells. After a certain period, these cells gather to create shrimp meat, without the animal. Based on the above, is it permissible to consume this manufactured shrimp meat? And if they reverse the experiment to birds, cattle, sheep, and camels, is it permissible to eat this manufactured meat?
Answer
In the name of Allah, if it contains meat, then it is necessary to ensure that the meat, i.e., the essential part, is slaughtered according to the Ja'fari Sharia method. If it is completely devoid of natural meat and is touched by a non-Muslim, it is impure (najis) and not permissible to eat. However, if it is untouched by a non-Muslim and contains no natural meat, then it is permissible, whether it is beneficial or harmful. But it is not sufficient to ensure this by selling it in Muslim markets unless the people in the market have the habit and conscience to avoid the forbidden and sell the forbidden. Allah knows best.
