What is the ruling on using a waqf (endowment) for something other than what it was endowed for? In light of the pandemic of this cursed virus called Corona, may Allah protect us and you from it, the mosques have been closed until further notice. Now, with the approach of the holy month of Muharram, we have found advertisements from some of these mosques that have not opened their doors for prayer, that they will open for Husseini gathering, and they have not announced the resumption of prayer in them. So is this considered a violation of the waqf or not? And what are the consequences?
Answer
In the name of Allah, there is no prohibition on holding condolences and gatherings in mosques because they were established for worship, and holding condolences is a form of worship. Allah knows best.
